About Edna

Born Edna Stephanie Preddie on February 4, 1917 to Annie and James Preddie in the North Eastern District of Port of Spain, Trinidad. Edna was the oldest of nine children: Iris K. Preddie (deceased), Arthur Preddie (deceased), Evelyn "Bell" Abraham (deceased), Enid Preddie (deceased), MacDonald Preddie (deceased), Jean Crawford (deceased), Sylvia Phil, and Marjorie Lake. She also had three sisters from her dad's second family: Edna, Tiny Benjamin, and Joyce Georald.

After completing the seventh standard (equivalent to high school), Edna went on to serve in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II. Her duties were mostly administrative as women's roles were very limited at that time in the military. Edna was very proud of her time of service and spoke of it often with fond memories.

She went on to marry Patrick Victor LeGendre on July 10,1944 at the Methodist Church of San Fernando. They had four children: Harold "Hoppy" LeGendre, Joy Hicklin, Gloria LeGendre-Patty, and Judy Davis. Edna and Patrick separated, but never divorced and she continued to raise her children and first grandchild, Paul LeGendre, as a single parent.

Edna journeyed to the United States in search of a better and more prosperous life in 1975. She lived in the Washington, DC area where she worked as a certified nursing assistant until she retired. Edna loved Trinidad, but she also loved her home in the United States and she became a true patriot. In 2000, Edna became a U.S. citizen and she was very proud. Her joy was in her family and taking care of children, in fact she was a volunteer grandmother in Seat Pleasant, Maryland and a volunteer at Prince George's Hospital Center. She loved people and was very generous, always giving what little she could to charities such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Edna was affectionately known as "Auntie Edna" to many family and friends. She had a passion for music and the arts. Edna was a skilled pianist and sang in the church choir for many years. She also loved to knit and crochet. Edna made many lovely items shared with family and friends over the years.

A devout Christian, Edna had a strong faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. She lived a blessed life and at 93 years old, she was never in pain and was of sound mind -- even at the very end. On Thursday, January 20, she woke up as usual and asked her daughter Gloria for mint tea and ginger beer (a well-known drink from Trinidad). Later that evening after having dinner and a bath, she laid down to sleep and never woke up. Our beloved Auntie Edna passed peacefully in her sleep.

The lessons she taught us and stories she shared will be remembered always. We will carry her in our hearts and in the lives of our children and their children forever.
